I learned from my economist partner ...Hi Patricia,

I learned from my economist partner - who, it turns out, had Stigler on his PhD committee (!!) - that the use of the term "economics imperialism" actually is very much to be confused with Marx's idea of "economic imperialism," a self-conscious play on Marx's theory. You may have already known that, though. I didn't.

Neat post,
DanielDanielhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13099461086991460463noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5499217243284937366.post-48223579754693999432014-07-21T13:25:41.292-04:002014-07-21T13:25:41.292-04:00I see. To my eye, it appeared at first to be a way of dismissing economic analyses, but just as importantly, of naturalizing the approaches (sociological, philosophical) toward "voting," "fairness," &c. that the economic analysis of these things might challenge as somehow unquestionable. As if these older approaches are free of ideologies or interests.

A sociologist, Tia DiNora, wrote a book called "Beethoven and the Construction of Genius," that was received by "traditional" musicologists as an interloper's work (as imperialist maybe?). I just thought it brought different insights and perspectives. I think among some people in creative fields, sociology feels similarly "imperialist." I say, then just ignore it.

Anyway, sorry to have gotten defensive. I've also heard from many people that Gary Becker was the nicest guy in the world. Although I know that's not the point.Danielhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13099461086991460463noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5499217243284937366.post-31843425841661321262014-07-21T13:10:15.247-04:002014-07-21T13:10:15.247-04:00Hi Daniel,
With respect to "economics imperia...Hi Daniel,
With respect to "economics imperialism," the linked Wikipedia entry has a lot of sources, but just as an example the Mäki 2009 paper "Economics Imperialism: Concept and Constraint" says:

"'So economics is an imperial science: it has been aggressive in addressing central problems in a considerable number of neighboring social disciplines and without any invitations.' So wrote George Stigler in 1984, and was perfectly justified in doing so (Stigler 1984, 311). The imperialistic inclination of economics has been in operation for the last half a century, and it has gained in strength. As paradigmatic examples of the trend, one may cite works such as [long list] and Becker’s A Treatise on the Family (1981)."

Mäki is quoting Stigler, who is described by Wikipedia this way: "George Joseph Stigler (January 17, 1911 – December 1, 1991) was a U.S. economist. He won the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences in 1982, and was a key leader of the Chicago School of Economics, along with Milton Friedman."Patricia Marinohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16087880431696831634noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5499217243284937366.post-76369333544723519362014-07-21T12:44:14.728-04:002014-07-21T12:44:14.728-04:00To me, to say that "economics imperialism,&qu...To me, to say that "economics imperialism," a term that no economist would use, I imagine, is "intended to colonize" seems quite silly, but if that's how you want to put it, I'm sure there's a group of people who LOVE it.
